PreK4 Curriculum Overview

📚 1. Literacy (Language & Early Reading/Writing)

Goals

  • Build phonological awareness
  • Develop vocabulary and oral language
  • Introduce print concepts
  • Begin emergent writing

Skills & Activities

Phonological Awareness

  • Identify beginning sounds (sun starts with /s/)
  • Rhyming (cat/hat, dog/fog)
  • Clap syllables

Print Awareness

  • Recognize book front/back, title, author
  • Recognize first name
  • Track words left to right during read-alouds
  • Environmental print (stop signs, labels)

Letter Knowledge

  • Identify uppercase letters (A–Z exposure)
  • Match letters to sounds (intro level)
  • Letter of the week activities

Writing

  • Name tracing and writing
  • Hold a writing utensil correctly
  • Drawing + “story dictation”

Read-Alouds

  • Daily story time
  • Answer questions about stories
  • Predicting story outcomes
  • Retelling using pictures and sequencing them

🔢 2. Math

Goals

  • Develop number sense
  • Recognize shapes and patterns
  • Build early measurement and comparison skills
  • Practice data analysis

Skills & Activities

Number Sense

  • Count 0–20 (rote and objects)
  • Recognize numbers 0–20
  • One-to-one correspondence (counting objects correctly)
  • Estimate number of items in a jar (between 1-20)
  • Identify number or manipulatives that are more, less or same

Patterns

  • AB, AAB, ABB, ABC patterns using objects or pictures

Shapes

  • Identify circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, hexagon, rhombus, pentagon, star, heart
  • Identify cube, sphere, rectangular prism, cylinder, pyramid, triangular prism
  • Categorize 2D vs. 3D shapes

Measurement & Comparison

  • Big/medium/small, tall/short, heavy/light
  • Use non-standard measurement (blocks, hands)

Math Play

  • Counting songs (“Five Little Ducks”)
  • Simple board games with dice

Data Anaylsis

  • Draw and/or interpret bar graphs and pictographs

🔬 3. Science

Goals

  • Encourage curiosity and observation
  • Introduce basic life, earth, and physical science concepts
  • Introduce science tools

Units & Activities

Life Science

  • Explore the 5 senses
  • Investigate animals: habitat, migration, diet, adaptations
  • Plant seeds and observe and measure growth
  • Discuss plant, apple, and pumpkin life cycle
  • Observe insect life (caterpillars)

Earth Science

  • Weather
  • Seasons awareness
  • Exploring rocks, soil, water
  • Space science- planets and moon in relation to Earth
  • Seasonal nature walks

Physical Science

  • Sink/float experiments
  • Magnet exploration
  • Rainbow light refraction

Scientific Skills

  • Asking “what do you notice?”
  • Simple prediction (“What will happen if…?”)
  • Using senses to observe

STEM

  • draw a design for a specific purpose and build it given the materials

🎨 4. Creative Arts

Goals

  • Encourage self-expression
  • Develop fine motor skills
  • Explore a variety of art processes and materials
  • Explore music, movement, and visual arts

Activities

Visual Arts

  • Explore various art processes: drawing, painting, sculpting
  • Shape and color art projects
  • Seasonal crafts or craft that ties into letter of the week
  • Mixing paint colors
  • Experiment with materials- crayons, watercolor paint, do a dots, colored pencils, markers, brushes, sponges, q-tips

Music

  • Singing daily/holiday/seasonal songs
  • Rhythm with instruments (bells)
  • Clap/tap beat patterns
  • Fingerplays

Movement/Dance

  • Creative movement to music
  • Animal walks (bear crawl, bunny hop)
  • Freeze dance

Dramatic Play

  • Dress-up play
  • Dramatize familiar stories

🤝 5. Personal & Social Skills

Goals

  • Build independence
  • Develop emotional regulation
  • Learn cooperation and classroom behavior

Skills & Activities

Self-Regulation

  • “Calm down” corner strategies
  • Breathing exercises (balloon breathing)
  • Feeling identification (happy, sad, angry, excited)

Social Interaction

  • Sharing and turn-taking games
  • Partner activities
  • Group circle time expectations

Independence

  • Seeks new experiences and try new things
  • Cleaning up centers
  • Putting on coats/backpacks
  • Washing hands properly
  • Communicate his/her needs
  • Pouring own water and opening up own snack package
  • Put papers in folder and put folder into backpack
  • Stat personal information (first and last name, age, birthday, school name, phone number, address)

Classroom Community

  • Morning meeting routines
  • Classroom jobs (line leader, helper)
  • Respecting personal space
  • Practice using manners
  • Play cooperatively and respect others

Conflict Resolution

  • “Use your words” practice
  • Practice problem-solving in social situations
  • Simple problem-solving steps:
    1. Stop
